All roads lead here, and that is the problem

Lazio is the knot of Italian transport: the Autostrada del Sole crosses it from north to south, the Aurelia runs along the coast, and everything converges on the Grande Raccordo Anulare, which circles Rome for seventy kilometres. Getting here has never been the problem; the ring road is.

By car and motorhome

From the north you come down the A1 to Orte or Rome north, or along the Aurelia if the coast is the destination. From the south you climb the A1 to Frosinone or take the main road to Terracina. For the Pontine coast you leave at Valmontone and drop down to Latina.

With a motorhome the rule is not to cross Rome. Join the ring road on the right side and leave it at the first useful exit: in the city the streets are narrow, parking is scarce and much of the centre is closed to traffic. Nearly all the campsites in the ring have a link to the centre, and that is why they exist.

By train

Rome has two main stations and both are central. From them regional trains run to Viterbo, Latina, Frosinone, Rieti and along the coast: many seaside campsites are a walk from a stop. The train to Ostia is the simplest way to reach the sea without a vehicle.

By plane

Fiumicino is the largest airport in Italy and has a direct train to Termini and regional services along the coast. Ciampino serves low-cost flights and lies on the Castelli side. From both you can hire anything, motorhomes included, though for those you should book well ahead.
